How to create Mood Boards? And what for?

The concept of Mood Board is something that becomes very common nowadays, but not everybody completely understands what it is and the most important, what for. In this article we will try to explain and describe this topic in simple words and shortly.

First of all, the best way to tell what is Mood Board - to say that it’s an instrument for visual communication. Sometimes it’s hard to explain something with text or speech and the best way to share your vision and ideas - is actually to show it using references.

What is reference? Generally speaking, reference is “something like…” For example: “the reference for Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia was a sand castle”. So, it is inspirational concept that influence your work / project. 

Mood Board can include not only photos, but also illustrations, little notes, sketches, pieces of materials (textile, stone, wood, ceramics etc). 

 

The most common types of Mood Boards:

  • Storytelling. Any story to tell? Try to create a timeline using visuals. Think about places, characters, light, atmosphere.
  • Concept. Explain your idea using references and similar concepts. 
  • Visual. If you need to produce photo or video shoot, don’t forget to create a visual mood board with examples to help your team to understand each other better.
